Stop motion animation, by using a metal skeleton surrounded in rubber that could be moved one frame at a time to create the illusion of movement.
He spent time studying real life movement of the creature that he was animating. E.g. gorillas, while also trying to put emotion into the actions of the creatures to create empathy and a believable fantasy.
He used a rudimentary greenscreen far before its time. Through glass screens projections and physicals models.
A lot of modern tools are clearly built off of the techniques used years ago. While modern tools allow for more flexibility and creativity, some prefer the traditional methods.
An extensive use of story boards and concept sketches were very common and useful as the first designs and ideas were rarely exactly what was used in the final product.
Ray Harryhausen was a large inspiration to many animators and directors
